2001-06-29:   Our upgrade-policy. We have received several mails concerning the new version 2.3.0, asking always one of these questions: a) How to upgrade? b) Why is this upgrade not free (why the upgrade needs to be payed for) a) How to upgrade All the information is available on our website, especially on the Order page from which you can follow the link to Customer Area where you can purchase the upgrade. b) Why the upgrade needs to be payed for? Why does the world turn around??   :o)) Data Modeller is a software tool, it has some development plans, some distribution policy. We have set up the policy stating that bug-fixes and minor updates are free and major upgrades need to be payed for. This policy is quite common and as far as we know it is practiced by all major software vendors (do you not need to pay for upgrades of your C++, Delphi, Windows, SQL Server, etc.?). Version 2.3 contains considerable amount of work inside, if you do not believe it, have a look at it and try all of it's new extraordinary functions. Many features have been added on our customer's requests and other requested features will be still added in the minor (free!!) updates in the 2.3.x line. We are trying to work hard for our users and I do think it is not fair to complain that we are asking something in return! Please consider also the following points: The registration key for XTG Data Modeller 2.2.x cannot be used with version 2.3.x. The current business-policy is that all minor updates are free (i.e. from 2.2.1 to 2.2.5 or from 2.3.0 to 2.3.1 and so on), but all the major upgrades have to be paid for (i.e. from 2.2.x to 2.3.x).   You are not forced by any means to upgrade to version 2.3. The version 2.2.9 is stable release used by many users and not all of them will feel the need to upgrade. You have probably bought version 2.2.x because it suits you and there may not be any need for you to upgrade.   No one has to upgrade right now. You may upgrade at any later time to e.g. version 2.3.1 or 2.3.2 or any later version in 2.3.x line for the same (upgrade) price as now.   There has been stated in the price-book, that upgrades in the 2.2.x line are free. There has not been a word about version 2.3 and one could deduce from this that upgrade to 2.3 line will not be free (please note also that we have provided free upgrades in the 2.2.x line (from 2.2.1 to 2.2.9) for about a year).   The version 2.3 is MAJOR update with MANY new features and considerable amount of work behind it and this is also why it's price is higher ($139).
